The client envisioned their expansive garden, divided into a charming courtyard and a sprawling park, as a haven for family leisure and relaxation. Key desires included seamlessly integrating the driveway and commuting areas into the leisure and family zones, creating a spacious alfresco dining area, and incorporating a delightful cottage-style planting scheme. They also sought to highlight the existing stonework treasures – a weathered wall and a timeless well – while incorporating a secure, modern stairway to the upper terrace. Their vision extended beyond the courtyard, encompassing a masterplan for the park, which included a dedicated BBQ shelter, a generous leisure lawn, and the revitalisation of the park itself, potentially featuring an eye-catching element at its furthest end.

In the new garden, you're greeted by a stunning herringbone- patterned clay paver patio that leads to the heart of the courtyard. The real show-stopper is the two-level water feature. Water from the basin installed at the upper level of the old stone wall, flows through rustic copper faucets into the bottom basin, creating a stunning display. The entire courtyard is adorned with a variety of blooming flowers and lush greenery, adding to the natural beauty of the space. With its rustic materials and French-inspired design, this courtyard is a sun-drenched haven offering a constellation of intimate escapes. It allows one to chase the sun, choosing their mood and soaking in the atmosphere of each unique patio. Apart from leisure function, a section of the courtyard may be easily converted into a driveway, as requested by clients.

The courtyard

The courtyard

While the overall design evokes the feel of a French courtyard, the use of local materials and traditional Scottish elements adds a touch of authenticity and keeps the design grounded in its surroundings. The old stone wall, for example, is a common feature in Scottish architecture, and its use in the water feature helps to create a sense of history and place. The copper taps also add a touch of warmth and character, and their gleam in the sunlight is reminiscent of the golden hues of a Scottish sunset.

Despite layout's formality, the lines are disappearing in dense greenery.

Almost-French

Almost-French

The very essence of France is captured in the meticulous choice of materials, a harmonious blend of old and new, whispering tales of sun-drenched days.

Terracing

Terracing

The preexisting old stone wall became a star of the design - a home to a two-tiered rustic water feature and bold corten steel stairway.
